A home décor pro has revealed three interior design trends that are dead in the water - and the one style of furniture you should never waste your money on.

Preston Konrad is a creative director based in New York best known for his appearances on the Today show as well as on Good Morning America, Rachel Ray, and Access Hollywood.

In a resurfaced video, he warned against shiplap panelling, monotone kitchens in neutral colours like grey, and 'trendy' furniture.

Instead, Mr Konrad recommended wallpaper and mixing textures, jewel-toned kitchens, and mid-century furnishings.

'I've never loved the whole 'trend' thing or a certain style, I love to mix versions things to create my own point of view,' he said in a video. 'My approach to interiors is if you like it, do it. Don't change what you love because an editor told you to.'

Mr Konrad went explained why experts claim the aforementioned trends were 'totally finished'.

'Shiplap is done - it's everywhere, it's on every home renovation show, and everyone's house is starting to look the same,' he said. 'What's trending right now is more wallpaper and more interest.'

Homes are mixing and matching patterns, choosing bold colours, layering carpets, and reaching for sofas with brocade fabrics.

The 39-year-old used to design retail spaces for high end brands and said layered rugs were a must when he styled Ralph Lauren stores.

'It adds texture, it adds dimension, it makes your house just look a bit more curated,' he said.

If you're a fan of monotone kitchens, Mr Konrad suggested going with jewel tones like dark greens and deep blues

Mr Konrad also revealed that grey kitchens were 'dead'. 

'It's pretty but everything looks the same,' he said.

'Mid-century everything - more traditional, more interest, I approve of this. Traditional styles age the best,' he said.

Some were anxious about the choices they made for their homes.

'Do I have to tell my husband the $50,000 custom kitchen we had installed is out of style?' one asked.

'I have original 1910s shiplap in my house and I love it,' another said.

But many were happy for the advice.

'I agree! I love green kitchens - I think I'm going to bite the bullet,' a woman wrote.
